The Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC) is an ongoing programme administered by Innovate UK under the UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE) initiative, funded by the Department for Transport. UK SHORE has been allocated £708 million since 2021 to develop and support R&D of clean maritime technologies, with a further £448 million announced for 2026 to 2030. The CMDC is the primary grant mechanism within this programme. Rounds 1 to 6 have allocated over £164 million to 211 projects across feasibility studies, collaborative R&D trials, and demonstrations. Each round is split into strands covering different development stages: Deployment Trials (operational real-world demonstrations), Pre-Deployment Trials, and Feasibility Studies. The CMDC targets maritime decarbonisation technologies including zero-emission propulsion, wind propulsion, onboard carbon capture, energy storage, and smart/autonomous maritime systems.
