UKRI Cross Research Council Responsive Mode Pilot Scheme
Funds interdisciplinary programmes in the United Kingdom that span multiple research sectors and cross council boundaries.
The UKRI Cross Research Council Responsive Mode Pilot Scheme supports emerging interdisciplinary research ideas that transcend or significantly span multiple research disciplines. It addresses a funding gap identified in the 2015 Nurse Review and 2022 Grant Review for projects lacking a clear lead research council. Seven councils collaborate: AHRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC, MRC, NERC, and STFC. The scheme uses a novel Interdisciplinary Assessment College (313 members) to evaluate applications, avoiding the traditional discipline-specific peer review that disadvantages interdisciplinary proposals. Total budget was £65 million across two completed rounds (~36 awards per round). Projects run for a maximum of two years. UKRI funds 80% FEC. The scheme is currently between cycles — round 3 not yet announced.
No upcoming rounds verified. Cadence: Biennial.
