Wellcome Early-Career Awards provide full salary coverage plus up to £400,000 in research expenses for early-career researchers who have completed their PhD (or equivalent) and are ready to lead their first independent project. The award typically lasts five years. Coapplicants are not accepted — applicants must have a sponsor at their administering organisation and are encouraged to identify a mentor. The scheme runs three times a year. Eligible administering organisations include universities, research institutes, and healthcare organisations in the UK, Republic of Ireland, and LMICs (excluding India and mainland China). Applicants must have no more than three years of postdoctoral experience at the deadline (with allowances for career breaks). Assessment criteria mirror Discovery Awards: research proposal (50%), skills and experience (25%), research environment (25%).
