Wellcome Infectious Disease Clinical Trial Award

Connects Wellcome Infectious Disease Clinical Trial Award to support lmic-led randomised controlled trials on licensed infectious disease interventions.

This one-off funding call supports transdisciplinary teams led from Africa, South Asia, or South-East Asia to conduct randomised controlled trials optimising licensed pharmaceutical interventions for infectious diseases. Awards range from £1 million to £8 million over three to five years. Wellcome expects to make 8–12 awards in this highly competitive call, delivered in partnership with NIHR using UK international development funding. The lead applicant and at least one coapplicant must be based in Africa, South Asia, or South-East Asia (excluding mainland China) and intend to remain resident there for the duration. At least 50% of the team must be based in those regions. Eligible disease areas are strictly defined: mycobacterial infections (TB, leprosy, NTM), bacterial infections (STIs, lower respiratory tract infections, bloodstream infections), invasive fungal infections, and dengue, leishmaniasis, or schistosomiasis.
