SMART Partnerships funds collaborative knowledge-transfer projects between Welsh businesses and Welsh research institutions, with the aim of increasing the capability and capacity of Welsh businesses to undertake RD&I. The Welsh Government grant covers 100% of the knowledge-base partner's eligible project costs, with the business required to match a minimum of 50% of costs. Projects run for 6–12 months. Lead knowledge-base partners must be Welsh higher education institutions, further education colleges, research or technology organisations, or Catapults. Contract research and research service provision are explicitly excluded. Applicants must demonstrate a genuine collaborative partnership and show positive impacts under the Well-being of Future Generations Act. This programme is the spiritual successor to SMART Expertise (the ESF-co-funded academic-industry collaboration scheme that ran 2014–2020).
