DURIP, the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program, is a tri-service route administered by AFOSR, the Army Research Office, and the Office of Naval Research. It funds U.S. degree-granting institutions of higher education to buy major research equipment that expands or creates capability in Department of Defense areas of interest. The request range is $50,000 to $1.5 million. Awards are typically one year, and the program is confined to U.S. universities that grant degrees in science, math, or engineering. For-profit firms, nonprofits, research organizations, and individuals are not eligible. DURIP runs on an annual cycle and sits outside the AFOSR Open BAA, so the March 2026 closure does not affect it. DURIP suits labs that already know the equipment gap they need to close and can show why the purchase strengthens DoD-relevant research. The strongest applications are usually clear on the instrument to be acquired, the research it unlocks, and the university setting that can put the asset to work immediately.
