Birth defects touch about three in every hundred US births and are a leading cause of infant death and lifelong illness, yet the cause of two out of three birth defects is still unknown. Stillbirth, a pregnancy loss after 20 weeks, is common too — more than 20,000 happen in the US every year, and CDC calls it an under-evaluated public health issue.
