Defense Innovation OnRamp sits under the Defense Innovation Unit and serves as a rolling entry point for U.S. commercial companies that can help the Department of Defense adopt commercial technology faster. DIU says its mission is to strengthen national security by moving commercial technology into military use and widening the innovation base that supports it. The route uses Other Transaction authority to award prototype work quickly, often in as few as 60 to 90 days. DIU says companies generally keep ownership of their intellectual property, and successful efforts can move into follow-on production agreements or a Success Memo that helps other federal buyers procure the solution without re-competing it. The best fit is a for-profit U.S. company with a dual-use product that can answer a defined military need without losing its commercial shape. DIU’s focus areas span artificial intelligence, autonomy, cyber and telecom, emerging technology, energy, human systems, and space, so applicants need a real defense use case as well as a credible delivery path.
