The FIRE (Fusion Innovation Research Engine) Collaboratives were announced January 16, 2025, funding 6 virtual multi-institutional collaborative projects at $107M in the first round, with up to $180M total anticipated over 4 years. FIRE creates fusion energy science and technology innovation ecosystems by bridging FES basic science research with the growing commercial fusion industry's needs. Projects are structured as virtual, centrally-managed collaboratives with multi-institutional teams including universities, national labs, and industry partners. Both FIRE and the Milestone Program are administered directly by DOE FES.
