EDA University Centers
Helps EDA University Centers for regional economic development for innovation and strategic advancement.
EDA University Centers was a grant program of the U.S. Economic Development Administration, a federal agency in the Department of Commerce. The program used universities as anchors for regional economic development and dates to about FY1980. At its peak, 70 centers operated across 47 states and territories. The award instrument was a grant, but the program is now wound down and no longer has funding available. Eligibility was limited to universities in the United States; for-profit firms, nonprofits, research organizations, and individuals were not eligible. The archived record places the program in a U.S. regional-development lane rather than a research-commercialization lane. Its public value came from turning campus capacity into regional capability, especially where a university could convene local partners around economic development, commercialization, and ecosystem support. Because the competition ended with FY2023 or earlier, it now functions as a historical reference point rather than an active route for applicants.
