In 1971, the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act transferred about 44 million acres from the federal government to Alaska Native regional and village corporations. Some of that land was already contaminated before the transfer — old fuel storage, power generation, waste handling, mining and other past activity — and that contamination is now the corporations' and Tribes' problem to deal with.
