Award for Innovative Mindset (AIM)
Funds bold and early Friedreich's ataxia ideas that are high risk but can shift the field with strong rationale.
The Award for Innovative Mindset (AIM) is FARA's high-risk, high-gain route for Friedreich's ataxia ideas that are too early for standard support because preliminary data are limited. It exists to back concepts that could change the field if they work, rather than incremental extensions of existing projects. The award provides up to $100,000 for one year and runs on an annual cycle without a letter of intent. Applications are centered on a single spring deadline, and the review emphasis is on whether the idea is genuinely innovative, potentially transformative, and clearly relevant to FA research, with the timeline built for a single decisive review. This route suits investigators who can explain why the concept matters before the evidence package is complete. FARA explicitly welcomes proposals where preliminary data are encouraged but not required, so the application has to make the scientific logic and expected impact do the work, not the volume of supporting data.
Each grant below is a distinct funding opportunity with its own eligibility, scope, and deliverables.
