Catalyst

Catalyst is a Massachusetts Clean Energy Center program for Massachusetts-based early-stage climatetech companies, nonprofit research institutions, and student-led teams. It sits under MassCEC and gives awards of up to $75,000 for work at TRL 2 to 4, which means projects moving from concept into lab validation. The program is co-administered with MassVentures, so applicants come through a state venture channel rather than a general grants portal. The application is built for small teams: it uses the MassVentures portal, limits submissions to an 11-page narrative with appendices, and asks finalists to engage in pitch coaching and business mentoring. DICES runs beside Catalyst as the companion route for applicants who are underrepresented in climatetech or facing economic barriers, and both programs share the same annual cycle and submission process. Catalyst itself can support up to seven awards in a round, which gives it enough room for a broad early-stage field without losing a competitive standard. The program's track record points to what MassCEC values most at this stage: technical plausibility, a credible team, and an idea that can move beyond the first experiment. Since inception, Catalyst has put more than $13 million into 215 awardees, with $852 million in follow-on capital and 455 patent applications attributed to alumni. Applicants who already have a clear use case, a realistic validation plan, and a clean-energy problem worth proving will usually fit best.
