Clean Energy Internship Program

The Clean Energy Internship Program reimburses Massachusetts clean energy employers for taking on interns, rather than paying interns a standalone stipend. Awards are $4,320 per intern for fall or spring placements and $8,640 per intern for summer placements or construction, installation, and maintenance roles. The program sits under the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and is built for employers that can create real work experience inside the clean-energy economy. Eligibility is tied to the employer and the work. A company or nonprofit must provide goods or services related to clean energy as defined in Massachusetts law, be registered in Massachusetts, and maintain at least one in-state office. The program runs multiple times a year and is first come, first served, so timing matters as much as fit. The current record also points to a large footprint, with more than $24 million disbursed and roughly 7,000 interns placed since 2011. The strongest applicants are employers who can document an eligible role, hire quickly, and keep the administrative side straightforward. Because the program reimburses the employer, not the intern, it works best when the internship is part of a wider talent strategy rather than a one-off placement.
