InnovateMass is a Massachusetts Clean Energy Center program for Massachusetts-based climatetech startups that need help crossing the commercialization gap between angel capital and venture capital. It offers grants of up to $350,000 plus technical support, and it is designed around projects that can advance a clean-energy solution with strong commercial potential. The program sits under MassCEC and is more demanding than an early concept award because it expects a startup to bring in at least one Demonstration Project Partner. The structure is explicit. A lead applicant must apply with a demonstration partner, and the company must keep a majority of headquarters, R&D, manufacturing, or sales and marketing activity in Massachusetts. The program is annual, allows up to two projects per round from the same applicant, and uses a two-part standard track with an extra concept-paper step for the Gridtech Spotlight path. Prior awardees can come back, but only with a new and distinct technology. The current cycle also includes defined review milestones and a project launch window later in the year. Applicants do best when the project already has a practical use case and an outside partner ready to prove it in the field. InnovateMass is not a broad startup subsidy. It is a demonstration-oriented grant that rewards teams able to show who will test the technology, why the test matters, and how the result will help move the product toward market entry.
