Historic Preservation Tax Credit (HTC)

Funds historic restoration in Missouri through a tax credit style preservation incentive.

Missouri Department of Economic DevelopmentUnited StatesTax credit

Historic Preservation Tax Credit (HTC) is Missouri's state tax credit for rehabilitating historic structures. It is administered by the Department of Economic Development and can offset state income tax liability. The credit runs at 25 to 35 percent of qualified rehabilitation costs and may be transferable. Projects must meet State Historic Preservation Office standards, and the program is open to for-profit businesses, nonprofits, and individuals. The cycle is rolling. It suits property owners, developers, and nonprofits restoring eligible buildings in Missouri, especially when the credit can close a gap in the capital stack. It also reaches individual owners, which broadens the field beyond large commercial redevelopments and keeps the program relevant for neighborhood-scale rehabs, adaptive reuse, and downtown preservation work. Because it is a tax credit rather than a cash grant, the value comes from preservation compliance, monetization, and project timing as much as from the renovation itself. That matters in practice.
