NASA SBIR is the agency's non-dilutive funding route for U.S. small businesses developing technologies tied to NASA mission needs. It sits under the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and uses the SBIR authority as a commercialization path for companies that can prove technical feasibility and carry work into later development. For PY2026, NASA moved to a Broad Agency Announcement model that releases appendices through the year. Phase I awards are capped at US$225,000 over six months, and Phase II awards reach US$1.275 million over 24 months. The program also includes Phase II-E, TABA support up to US$50,000, and later-stage paths such as Phase III. Eligible firms must be U.S.-owned, for-profit small businesses with 500 or fewer employees, and awards are submitted through NASA's electronic handbook. The program fits technical founders who can connect a mission need to a credible product roadmap and move quickly through appendix-specific proposals. The new BAA structure favors teams that track subtopic releases closely and can adapt to multiple annual windows. In 2025 NASA selected 299 Phase I awardees, which underscores both the scale of the program and the competition for slots.
