NC IDEA SEED

Funds North Carolina startup scaling through non dilutive support after early validation.

NC IDEAUnited StatesGrant

NC IDEA SEED is the larger follow-on grant in NC IDEA's founder portfolio, under the private Durham foundation founded in 2006. It awards $50,000 in non-dilutive capital to North Carolina startups that already have a working MVP, some market demand, and a clear plan to scale. The program is designed for companies that have moved past early validation and need grant support to accelerate growth. SEED runs annually and pays funds in milestone-based tranches over 6 to 12 months. Roughly 130 to 180 applications arrive each year, 20 to 24 advance to semi-finalist, 10 to 12 become finalists, and 5 to 7 receive awards. The most competitive companies usually report under $250,000 in annual revenue, or under $500,000 for food and beverage companies, have raised less than $250,000 in equity, and have at least one full-time NC-resident founder. The company should also be able to point to a path to venture funding within two years or more than $2 million in revenue within five years. U.S.-based for-profit companies are the practical fit; nonprofits, universities, research organizations, and individuals are not eligible, and the same cycle cannot include MICRO. SEED rewards discipline more than flash. The program favors companies that can show real customer demand, a credible operating plan, and a milestone structure that turns the grant into measurable progress over the next year. Founders who can explain how $50,000 removes a specific bottleneck, rather than simply adds more cash, are the best match.
