NICHD R01 Research Project Grant

Funds investigator-led child health research across broad biomedical domains through National Institute grants.

The R01 is NICHD's primary investigator-initiated research mechanism, open to researchers at universities, research organizations, hospitals, and small businesses. It funds hypothesis-driven and exploratory research across all twelve of NICHD's scientific branches: reproductive biology, pediatric development, child behavior, maternal-fetal medicine, intellectual disabilities, and rehabilitation. Three variants exist based on clinical trial involvement (CT required, BESH, CT not allowed). NICHD follows standard NIH R01 submission cycles (typically three receipt dates per year) with no fixed payline — funding decisions integrate scientific priority score, program priorities, portfolio balance, and available funds per the FY2026 funding strategy.
