NIDCR Extramural Research Grants

Funds dental, oral, and craniofacial science through independent research grants at United States institutions.

NIDCR Extramural Research Grants are the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research's main research funding umbrella for work on dental, oral, and craniofacial health and disease. The portfolio is organized through five scientific branches, covering topics from oral microbiology and orofacial pain to translational genomics, behavioral science, clinical research, and other grant activity. The program spans a wide range of NIH mechanisms, including R01, R21, R33, R34, R56, P01, P30, P50, U01, U54, UH2/UH3, UG3/UH3, DP1, and DP2. Most mechanisms are open to US and foreign institutions, while some training routes remain domestic. NIDCR's stated strategic priorities include the oral microbiome, head and neck cancers, salivary gland disease, craniofacial development, regenerative dentistry, HIV/AIDS oral health, health disparities, behavioral interventions, and precision medicine. The best fit is a project that sits squarely inside dental, oral, or craniofacial science and can be matched to one of the institute's branches or priority areas. Applicants tend to do well when the mechanism, scope, and scientific question line up cleanly, especially for translational, patient-oriented, or multi-component research.
