NEI Audacious Goals Initiative (AGI)
Funds major investigator-led vision research at universities and research organisations.
The Audacious Goals Initiative (AGI) is NEI's flagship research initiative aimed at restoring vision through regeneration of neurons and neural connections in the eye and visual system. AGI operates through competitive RFAs reissued in cycles — historical mechanisms include U24 cooperative agreements, R21 exploratory grants, and U01 discovery grants. As of the May 2026 fetch, all AGI-specific RFAs show 'Applications CLOSED.' The most recent funded cycle was RFA-EY-20-001 (U24, Translation-Enabling Models). New models for eye disease research sub-program was funded at $30M over 5 years. AGI program contact: Thomas Greenwell, Ph.D. (Greenwellt@nei.nih.gov).
