NINR Areas of Emphasis R21
Supports exploratory nursing studies with focused grants for innovative research approaches.
NINR Areas of Emphasis R21 is the exploratory companion to the institute's R01 line, reissuing PAR-22-231 for early-stage nursing research within NINR's five priority areas. It is active, allows clinical trials, and accepts submissions on standard NIH review cycles several times a year. Direct costs are capped at $275,000 over two years, with no more than $200,000 in any single year. U.S. universities, nonprofits, small businesses, for-profit companies, and state, local, tribal, and other government entities can apply, while federal agencies cannot. The program suits exploratory studies that need a limited, well-framed budget and a clear endpoint within two years. Its value is in giving nursing researchers enough room to test methods, feasibility, or preliminary data without moving into the scale of an R01. The recurring review window helps teams move from a pilot phase into a later R01 with a cleaner evidence base. It is a practical bridge to the R01.
