Baldrige Performance Excellence Program

Offers United States organizations a recognized framework for measuring performance excellence and quality improvement.

The Baldrige Performance Excellence Program is NIST's national quality award and public-private performance framework for U.S. organizations in manufacturing, service, small business, education, health care, and nonprofit/government. It is the nation's only public-private partnership dedicated to improving performance, resilience, and long-term success at the enterprise level. The Baldrige National Quality Award runs annually as a prize program for U.S. organizations, with individuals excluded and operations tied to U.S. organizations. Beginning with the 2026 award cycle, the Alliance for Performance Excellence and the Baldrige Foundation take over most operational responsibilities from NIST, so the direct federal role is shrinking. The best fit is an organization that already has a disciplined management system and wants external recognition against a formal excellence framework. That makes Baldrige more of a benchmark and signal than a cash grant, and its current transition means applicants will increasingly deal with the partner organizations rather than NIST itself.
