Accelerating Research Translation (ART)

Supports universities building durable technology transfer infrastructure and commercialization capacity.

Accelerating Research Translation (ART) sits under NSF's Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships and is built to help institutions of higher education translate federally funded research into commercial and economic impact. TIP's broader mission is to move breakthrough technologies toward market use and build a stronger innovation workforce, so ART is one of its institutional-capacity instruments rather than a startup award. The program is a grant competition for universities and other eligible nonprofits, with U.S.-based applicants and a new solicitation, NSF 25-548, published September 26, 2025. Five tracks are open, with awards ranging from up to $3 million over three years in ACT and ET, to up to $6 million over four years in GROW, up to $8 million over four years in RESOURCE, and up to $3 million over five years in CART. Each eligible institution may submit only one proposal for Track 1 or Track 2. ART works best for campuses that already have a credible translation pipeline and need infrastructure, training, or coordination to make it durable. The proposal should show how the institution will strengthen technology transfer, not just sponsor isolated projects, and the track choice should match the institution's maturity. For applicants with a strong research base and a plan for sustained commercialization support, the program can build the connective tissue between lab results and market adoption.
