Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative (OREI)
Funds organic farming research and extension services that strengthen sustainable practices and farmer expertise.
OREI funds high-priority integrated research, education, and extension projects that enhance the ability of organic producers and processors to improve production, marketing, and farm system resilience. The program allocates $66 million annually with a ~33% funding success rate — notably higher than most NIFA competitive programs. Key requirement: 100% matching (cost-sharing) is required. Eligible applicants are broad: land-grant institutions, universities, research foundations, federal agencies, national laboratories, private organizations, and individuals who are US citizens or nationals. The FY2026 cycle closed May 14, 2026; the FY2027 cycle is expected spring 2027.
