Supports developing tools and models to improve executive function outcomes in children during the first thousand days.

Wellcome LeapCooperative agreement

1kD is a Wellcome Leap program centered on the first thousand days of development, roughly ages 0 to 3. It aims to improve executive function outcomes in children by building better models and measurement tools for infant brain network development, making it one of the portfolio's more explicitly developmental programs. The program pool is $45 million. Performer teams have already been selected, and the available record places the program in mid-execution with no open solicitation at the time of capture. Eligibility is broad across universities, nonprofits, and the private sector, with the technical mix spanning life sciences, engineering, and computer science. The best fit is for teams that can connect neuroscience, measurement, and scalable intervention design. Its target is unusually specific: improve executive function outcomes by at least 20 percent in 80 percent of children before age 3. That makes it a strong match for groups comfortable with quantitative milestones, cross-disciplinary delivery, and a clinically meaningful endpoint. The program is directed by Holly Baines, PhD.
