SA-Flanders (FWO) Collaborative Research Projects
Funds cross-border Dutch and Flanders university partnerships for research collaboration.
The SA-Flanders (FWO) Collaborative Research Projects programme is a joint bilateral call between NRF (South Africa) and FWO (Research Foundation Flanders, Belgium). It funds 3-year fundamental research collaborations (no applied/commercial focus), with a maximum of 6 projects per call. Each project requires one main PI based in Flanders and one main PI based in South Africa; both sides must submit simultaneously to their respective agencies. The NRF contributes up to R1,500,000 ZAR per project over 3 years (R500,000/year), split between research activities/mobility and a postdoctoral position. FWO contributes up to €85,000/year (staff + consumables). South African PIs at historically advantaged institutions must include a partner from a historically disadvantaged institution (HDI). Peer review is international and joint; selection criteria weight Project (50%), Researchers (25%), and Collaboration (25%).
Each grant below is a distinct funding opportunity with its own eligibility, scope, and deliverables.
