National Research FoundationSouth AfricaGrant

Thuthuka (isiZulu: 'develop yourself') is NRF's flagship early-career researcher development grant. It supports South African citizens and permanent residents employed full-time at NRF-recognised public universities or public research institutions, targeting designated groups (Black — African, Indian, Coloured; female; persons with disabilities). Grants run on a 3-year renewable cycle (max 6 years per track), require a 1:1 institutional co-fund on running expenses, and must be held exclusively — no concurrent NRF research grants allowed. Three tracks exist: PhD Track (for researchers working toward their doctorate), Post-PhD Track (PhD completed within 5 years, transitioning to established researcher), and NRF Rating Track (PhD within 8 years, preparing to apply for formal NRF rating). Maximum NRF annual contribution is approximately R290,000 ZAR across expense categories, totalling ~R870,000 over 3 years. The institution must match all NRF-approved running expenses 1:1. Strategic targets require at least 80% of funded grantholders to be Black and at least 55% female.
