The DOE Office of Geothermal, formerly the EERE Geothermal Technologies Office, funds research, demonstration, and commercialization for geothermal energy. It now sits under DOE's Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office after the 2025 reorganization, and its mission is to reduce the cost and risk of geothermal development across enhanced geothermal systems, hydrothermal resources, low-temperature resources, and co-produced resources.

Its current flagship NOFO, DE-FOA-0003472, can reach $171.5 million and is structured for as many as 28 first-round awards over a project life of up to 72 months with annual review cycles. The award range is $4 million to $25 million per project, and the first round focuses on enhanced geothermal systems field tests and drilling or resource exploration. The office also supports FORGE, Wells of Opportunity, and the OG-AMMTO accelerator.

The strongest proposals are the ones that de-risk a site or tool rather than simply describe a promising idea. Applicants need a credible field-test plan, subsurface or drilling expertise, and enough cost share or partner support to move from characterization toward deployment.
