Wells of Opportunity (WOO)
Supports converting unused wells into geothermal production projects with integrated solutions.
Wells of Opportunity is a DOE geothermal pathway that converts existing oil and gas infrastructure into geothermal power production assets, allowing geothermal opportunities in legacy fields. It has two principal tracks: Well Retrofits for inactive or unproductive wells using thermoelectric generation, and Co-Production for active oil and gas wells that can generate electricity alongside ongoing hydrocarbon operations. Five projects have been supported across Texas, California, Nevada, Colorado, and Oklahoma, including teams such as Geothermix LLC, ICE Thermal Harvesting, Ormat Nevada, Gradient Geothermal, and the University of Oklahoma. The programme is notable for advancing an O&G-to-geothermal conversion pathway and supporting a BLM mechanism for future well conversions in Oklahoma.
