Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) is the primary statistical agency of the U.S. Department of Justice, operating under the Office of Justice Programs. It was established on December 27, 1979 under the Justice Systems Improvement Act and serves as the federal government's main source of criminal justice data.

BJS funds states, territories, federally recognized tribes, Statistical Analysis Centers, and research organizations to collect, analyze, publish, and disseminate information on crime, victims, offenders, and justice systems. Its annual portfolio includes the State Justice Statistics Program, NCHIP, NARIP, the National Prison Rape Statistics Program, the Survey of Public Defenders, the National Corrections Reporting Program, the Census of Law Enforcement Training Academies, and the National Victimization Statistical Support Program. NCHIP alone has directed nearly $1.1 billion since 1995.

The office uses competitive annual solicitations on a federal fiscal year cycle, with postings typically in late calendar Q4 or early Q1 and deadlines in the late winter and spring. It is not a fit for private companies; the audience is government statistical capacity, data infrastructure, and nationally comparable criminal justice reporting.
