Astera Institute is a US nonprofit that backs neglected, high-leverage research and infrastructure, with a strong tilt toward AI, neuroscience, open science, and life sciences. Its public case is that science funding and publishing are still optimized for a world that no longer exists, so it supports projects that can change both the questions being asked and the machinery used to answer them.

Most external applicants route through the Astera Residency, a 12 to 18 month fully funded program in Emeryville, California. The residency pays a salary of $125,000 to $250,000 a year and can include up to $1.5 million for project work, with application cycles running about twice a year. Astera also runs an Essay Competition with prizes of $30,000, $15,000, and $5,000 for active scientists who publish a public essay, and the structured portfolio is organized around Neuro & AGI, Radial Life Sciences, and the Foundation.

Astera's fit is unusually specific: open-first work, useful tools or infrastructure, and people-project alignment matter as much as technical ambition. The residency is the main public channel for outside researchers, while the Foundation Fellows route is invitation-only. Proposals are strongest when they point to a real bottleneck, a plausible adoption path, and work that can be made broadly accessible rather than kept proprietary.
