Astera Essay Competition
Offers an annual essay competition at Astera for scientists proposing solutions to improve research infrastructure systems.
The Astera Essay Competition invites active scientists to identify a concrete bottleneck in their own research or field that they hypothesize is underlied by systems-level or structural issues. Entrants propose testable hypotheses and experimental strategies to address these systemic challenges. Prizes are $30,000 (1st), $15,000 (2nd), and $5,000 (3rd), announced in the week of June 22 each year. The competition is open to any active scientist regardless of formal degree, institutional affiliation, or sector — including entrepreneurs and for-profit scientists. Team submissions are allowed but each individual can win only one prize. Astera Institute affiliates are disqualified. Essays are up to 3 single-spaced pages, posted publicly by the author (on any platform), and submitted via link through Astera's form. The emphasis is on concrete, testable problems rather than abstract frustrations or incremental improvements.
Each grant below is a distinct funding opportunity with its own eligibility, scope, and deliverables.
