The NIH Common Fund is a shared pool within the National Institutes of Health budget, overseen by the NIH Office of the Director, that pays for cross-cutting biomedical research efforts too broad for any single NIH institute or center to fund alone. Its Complement-ARIE program funds development of human-based laboratory methods able to complement or replace animal testing, and is co-run with NIEHS
