Pays teams up to $7 million in total cash prizes to build human-based lab methods that can complement or replace animal testing in biomedical research.
Phase 1 submissions first go through an eligibility and completeness review before a panel of scientific and technological experts scores them against five weighted criteria, with Approach carrying the largest weight, followed by Feasibility and Preliminary Data, then Significance, Team and Innovation. The challenge wants multidisciplinary teams building 'combinatorial NAMs' -- human-based cell, tissue, computational or biochemical models that complement, and in some cases replace, animal models in biomedical research and regulatory testing. Priority areas include chronic disease, neurobiological models, personalized medicine, cross-disease pathogenesis, toxicology and safety, and human health protection, though solvers are not limited to these.
