The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) is the NIH institute for brain and nervous system research, with a mission to reduce the burden of neurological disease for all people. It supports basic, translational, and clinical neuroscience through grants, contracts, scientific meetings, intramural research, workforce development, and public dissemination.

Its funding spans R01, R21, R03, SBIR/STTR, career development awards, clinical trial networks, and other transaction vehicles. The portfolio covers neurodegenerative disease, stroke, epilepsy, pain, traumatic brain injury, rare neurological conditions, and neurotechnology, and it also participates in the BRAIN Initiative, the HEAL Initiative, the Blueprint Consortium, and CounterACT.

NINDS is a strong home for projects that combine mechanistic neuroscience with a clear translational or clinical path, especially when the work can plug into a clinical trial network or a broader NIH initiative. The presence of grants, cooperative agreements, and other transactions means the right route depends on whether the project is exploratory, platform-oriented, or centered on a trial program.
