IB50K — 16th
Supports Instituto Balseiro's annual deep-tech business plan competition for university-linked teams building practical solutions.
The IB50K is Instituto Balseiro's annual technology-based business-plan competition, now in its 16th edition in 2026. Instituto Balseiro is a joint academic institution of the Argentine National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA) and the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, located at Centro Atómico Bariloche. The competition is open to teams whose projects are based in Argentina and whose membership is at least 50 percent individuals under 40 years old who are students or graduates of Argentine tertiary institutions. Eligible project categories include biotechnology, artificial intelligence, healthcare, climate change, energy, robotics, telecommunications, information technology, and other science- or technology-based fields.
The 2026 prize pool exceeds USD 50,000. Main prizes are USD 30,000 (first), USD 15,000 (second), and USD 5,000 (third). In addition, more than 15 sponsor-funded special prizes are awarded by partners including INVAP, Siemens Energy, Fundación Balseiro, and AEIB, covering categories such as AI, climate, biotechnology, agribusiness, and societal impact. No equity is taken and no co-funding is required; winners receive cash directly. The competition registration window for 2026 opened April 15 and closes July 24, 2026. Finalists are announced September 11, 2026; oral defenses take place October 29, 2026; the awards ceremony is October 30, 2026 at Centro Atómico Bariloche.
Evaluation criteria include originality, business opportunity quality, team strength, maturity level, and triple impact (economic, social, environmental). Applications are submitted via ib50k.ib.edu.ar/postulate/. Non-Argentine team members without Argentine academic credentials do not satisfy the eligibility requirement. Teams with strong scientific foundations, a clear technology-to-market pathway, and demonstrated social or environmental benefit are best positioned to advance to the oral defense round.
Biotechnology, AI, healthcare, climate change, energy, art/music, robotics, telecommunications, IT, and other science/technology-based fields.
