This is the first (and to-date only) themed round of CSIRO's Graphite R&D Grant. Eligible SMEs access between $10,000 and $50,000 in CSIRO funding, on the condition the business contributes at least the same amount in cash. Project length is capped at six months. The program supports development of a sustainable graphite industry in Australia, positioning local producers to supply battery anode markets in the United States and elsewhere.

Applicants must be incorporated in Australia with an ABN and an ACN, GST-registered, and employ fewer than 200 people. They must also be committed to pursuing international opportunities, particularly the United States. Applications close on 17 April 2026, or earlier if total available funding is exhausted. Eligible SMEs may combine this grant with a CSIRO Kick-Start voucher to unlock an additional $50,000 with CSIRO on a related project. As of 2026-05-15 the page also displays a notice that the EOI has closed — the two notices on the live page are inconsistent.

Collaborative R&D with CSIRO on natural and synthetic graphite production, particularly for battery anode applications. Themes: alternative feedstocks for synthetic graphite, recycling methods for graphite in batteries, characterisation of natural graphite ore, purification and spheronisation techniques, coating of spheronised materials, scale-up of graphite processing for battery anode activities, and other graphite-production innovation.
