CSIRO Graphite Research and Development Grant

Funds Australian small and medium firms through a CSIRO-led graphite grant for collaborative projects on battery-material production and processing scale-up.

The Graphite Research and Development Grant gives eligible Australian SMEs between $10,000 and $50,000 to run a collaborative R&D project with CSIRO experts, focused on natural and synthetic graphite production for battery anode and downstream applications. Eligible research themes include alternative feedstocks for synthetic graphite, recycling methods for graphite in batteries, characterisation of natural graphite ore, purification and spheronisation techniques, coating of spheronised materials, and scale-up of graphite processing for battery anode activities. The SME must contribute at least the same amount in cash; project length is capped at six months. Applicants must be incorporated in Australia with an ABN and an ACN, be registered for GST, and employ fewer than 200 people. The grant is part of the Batteries Research and Development Program funded by the Department of Industry, Science and Resources and delivered by CSIRO. Eligible SMEs may combine this grant with a CSIRO Kick-Start voucher to unlock up to an additional $50,000 with CSIRO. The current Expression of Interest round closes on 17 April 2026 or earlier if funding is exhausted.
