AWS Diagnostic Development Initiative
Funds non-cash support in the form of cloud credits and technical help for diagnostic innovation and health solutions.
Eligibility · Global — open worldwide
The AWS Diagnostic Development Initiative (DDI) was an emergency program announced by Amazon Web Services in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. AWS committed $20 million in total — delivered entirely as in-kind cloud credits and technical support, not cash — to accelerate innovation in rapid and accurate COVID-19 patient testing and other diagnostic solutions to mitigate future outbreaks. The remaining $12 million was distributed in 2021 following a scope-broadening to include broader diagnostic solutions beyond COVID-19.
DDI supported for-profit companies, nonprofits, universities, and research organisations working on diagnostics and healthcare technology. Benefits took the form of AWS cloud credit vouchers and direct technical support from AWS solutions architects. There was no minimum or maximum award size published; credits were allocated on a case-by-case basis per project need. UCSF's COVID-19 research initiative was among the publicly documented recipients.
The DDI is wound down as of 2026 and is not accepting new applications. The original AWS landing page at aws.amazon.com/health/diagnostic-development/ returns HTTP 404, and no 2026 cycle, deadline, or application portal has been identified in any available source. This entry is maintained as historical context for AWS's grantmaking activity during the COVID era; it does not represent a current funding opportunity.
Provided up to $20 million in AWS cloud credits and technical support to organizations developing rapid COVID-19 diagnostics and outbreak-response solutions; programme wound down in 2021 and is no longer accepting applications.
