Global trade moves through busy air, maritime, postal, road and rail networks, and organised crime can hide dangerous or illegal material inside legitimate cargo. Customs authorities need better ways to find threats without slowing the flow of goods or losing sight of revenue, safety and environmental risks.

Developing and testing cargo-security solutions for one or more transport modes and a crucial supply-chain point. Proposals choose either security of cargo or detection of smuggled and trafficked goods and materials. Work may use sensors, non-intrusive inspection, screening, automated threat recognition, tracking and tracing or other approaches to find, characterise and seize dangerous, illicit or regulated goods. Solutions must work with customs equipment and systems, cover the supply chain from load to delivery, address interoperability and cybersecurity, and reach TRL 4-5 by the end.
