Horizon Batteries: Sustainable Electrode Materials

Funds four €7.1M projects that make battery electrode materials cleaner to produce — via greener refining or plant-based sourcing instead of mined graphite.

OpenEuropean CommissionEU

Europe imports most of the raw and processed materials that go into battery electrodes, and that's a strategic bottleneck as demand for sodium-ion and next-generation lithium-ion batteries grows. This topic funds work to close that gap from two different directions, and a proposal picks one.

The first path is cleaner refining: developing and proving out refining and processing technology that tur

Developing and validating (TRL 4-5 by project end, starting at any TRL) either cleaner refining and processing technology for battery-grade metals and materials for sodium-ion or beyond-generation-3 lithium-ion batteries, or bio-based synthetic graphite and carbon electrode materials made from European biomass — a proposal picks one track, validated against economic viability, environmental sustainability, and cell-level performance.
