Horizon EV Fire Safety in Confined Spaces

Funds one €8M project to prevent, detect and contain electric-vehicle fires in garages, depots, ferryboats and other confined spaces.

ScheduledEuropean CommissionEU

Electric-vehicle fire risk is generally lower than the risk from internal-combustion vehicles, but battery thermal runaway and the difficulty of intervention in confined areas can still concern drivers, operators, firefighters and the public. This topic funds one Innovation Action to make EV fire prevention and response more reliable and consistent.

The project should build a comprehensive Europe

Developing and demonstrating affordable EV fire-safety systems for underground and built-in parking, garages, ferryboats and depots, with and without charging and during mono- or bidirectional charging. Projects should build European accident data, improve onboard diagnosis and early warning, mitigate battery thermal runaway, demonstrate detection, prevention, suppression and containment, create interoperable firefighting protocols, include SSH and public information, and reach TRL 6.
