Horizon Agrifood: Farm Biodiversity for Food Security
Funds two €6M research consortia that quantify agrobiodiversity's payoff and build the tools and finance to help farmers adopt it profitably.
Genetic and species diversity is what lets a farm bend instead of break — under drought, pests, disease, or a bad season. But the trend has run the other way: bigger, more uniform production is easier to finance and sell, so genetic erosion keeps creeping in even as it quietly undermines the resilience it takes for granted. Farmers, foresters and land managers often know diversifying would help. W…
Quantifying what farm-level agrobiodiversity (including soil microorganisms) really delivers for yield, nutrition, and resilience to pests, disease and other stress, and turning that into tools farmers can use: a decision-support tool for the risk of diversifying, tested private-finance instruments like nature credits, concrete risk-mitigation guidance, and routes to process, store and market non-conventional crops and local breeds. Work must take a multi-actor approach with farmers and land managers directly involved, and stays below TRL 4 — this funds analysis, tools and strategy, not new technology.
