Ships, sonar, offshore construction and other human activity fill Europe's seas with noise, and that noise disturbs marine life. Regulators still don't have a full, comparable picture of how much damage it does, or reliable tools to track it. This topic funds building that picture: the science, the monitoring methods and the indicators — not a cleanup project or a piece of construction.

Developing and improving the scientific methods, monitoring tools and ecological indicators used to assess how anthropogenic underwater noise disturbs marine organisms and ecosystems across different trophic levels and EU sea regions, in line with the noise thresholds and guidelines EU countries have already agreed under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive — plus investigating mitigation options that protect the ecosystem services a quieter ocean provides, including carbon sequestration, and tools to measure how well those mitigation measures work.
