The wars in Ukraine have left soil, water and air contaminated in places, sometimes beyond anything the EU has measured before. This topic funds cleaning that up for real — not another study of the damage, but working biotech and nature-based methods that actually get deployed on the ground.

Assessing conflict-related contamination of Ukraine's soil, water and air, then developing, testing and physically demonstrating cost-effective biotechnology and nature-based decontamination methods — including phytoremediation — to remediate it and restore ecosystem services. The consortium picks its own demonstration areas after the contamination assessment, tracks how well the recovered ecosystems hold up against climate change, and turns the results into replication recommendations for policymakers and relief organisations. Two projects are funded, each in the €5-6M lump-sum range.
