A future with long periods of ice-free Arctic conditions would change ocean, atmosphere, cryosphere and biological systems, as well as the lives and choices of Arctic communities and the rules governing a more navigable region. Trans- and multi-disciplinary research on the processes, timing, impacts and governance of a future ice-free Arctic. Projects should improve integrated ocean, atmosphere, cryosphere and biosphere models and observations; study cascading effects, tipping elements and uncertainty; develop sustainable mitigation and adaptation pathways; and support evidence-based decisions for Arctic Ocean governance, coastal communities, biodiversity and blue-economy activity.
