Horizon Future Ice-Free Arctic Research

Funds two €8M projects to understand an ice-free Arctic and guide resilient, sustainable choices for communities, ecosystems and global governance.

A future with long periods of ice-free Arctic conditions would change ocean, atmosphere, cryosphere and biological systems, as well as the lives and choices of Arctic communities and the rules governing a more navigable region. This topic funds two research projects to understand those changes and make them useful for sustainable decisions.

Projects should examine how timing and frequency of ice-

Trans- and multi-disciplinary research on the processes, timing, impacts and governance of a future ice-free Arctic. Projects should improve integrated ocean, atmosphere, cryosphere and biosphere models and observations; study cascading effects, tipping elements and uncertainty; develop sustainable mitigation and adaptation pathways; and support evidence-based decisions for Arctic Ocean governance, coastal communities, biodiversity and blue-economy activity.
