Horizon Antarctica and Southern Ocean Science

Funds two €11M research projects that clarify Antarctic and Southern Ocean changes and support evidence-based conservation and climate policy.

ScheduledEuropean CommissionEU

The Antarctic cryosphere and the Southern Ocean influence sea level, ocean circulation, carbon cycles, climate and biodiversity far beyond the polar region. Yet major uncertainties remain about how ice, ocean, atmosphere, ecosystems and human pressures interact across the near term, the period around 2050–2060 and the longer term. This topic funds research that turns those uncertainties into stron

Multidisciplinary research on the Antarctic cryosphere, Southern Ocean, climate and biodiversity across near-, mid- and long-term change. Projects improve Earth-system projections, ecosystem and biodiversity monitoring, conservation effectiveness, open and FAIR data, coupled models, policy recommendations and polar-observation coordination with SOOS, Copernicus, EMODnet, ESA and international partners.
