Horizon CBE: Alternative-Source Bio-Polymers
Funds two €3.25M projects that turn alternative bio-feedstocks into safe, circular polymers tested across at least two markets.
Many bio-based polymers still depend on crops and forestry biomass. This topic funds teams developing polymers from other bio-based sources, such as waste streams or underused feedstocks, with processes that can scale beyond the lab. The aim is to widen the pool of sustainable raw materials and open new uses for high-performing polymers.
Projects develop synthesis or extraction routes at TRL 5, w…
Developing scalable TRL 5 synthesis or extraction processes for Safe and Sustainable by Design bio-based polymers from alternative feedstocks rather than primary agricultural or forestry biomass; integrating pretreatment, purification and functionalisation where needed; testing the polymers in circular-by-design applications across at least two market sectors at TRL 4 or above; and validating safe, sustainable end-of-life routes.
