Development of hydropower technologies and water management schemes allowing for win-win situation of flexible hydropower and biodiversity improvement
Funds hydropower technology or water-management projects that boost grid flexibility on existing plants while improving river ecosystems and biodiversity.
This is a single-stage Research and Innovation Action funded as a lump sum, with three grants of EUR 4,000,000 expected from a EUR 12,000,000 2025 budget. Proposals follow the standard Horizon Europe application form, extended by two pages to 52 to properly address the Societal Readiness requirements, plus a lump-sum budget table. The call wants hydropower technology solutions or improved water-management schemes for existing run-of-river or reservoir hydropower plants connected to the grid, that create synergy between flexible energy generation and local ecosystem management — covering areas such as hydropeaking, floodplain biotopes, sediment transport, river-morphology restoration and climate-adapted water flows. Pumped storage hydropower and water schemes unrelated to hydropower are excluded.
